Vega Protein Powder Review

Vega Protein Powder Review

Vega is considered one of the best plant-based nutrition companies that provide great nutritional value through their various products. Although I am very farm from being a vegan, I did decide to try this protein powder out. Whey protein can sometimes mess with my digestive system and make my farts smell horrendous. If you’re a consistent protein drinker, than you know exactly what I’m talking about.

After trying this protein, I decided to give it a little review for the people that are interested. Read on for my review of the Vega Protein & Greens!

There are multiple benefits when it comes to this protein powder. First, a definite pro is the fact that it is a plant-based protein. It’s perfect if you live a vegan lifestyle as it doesn’t have any animal byproducts. It also has great taste with very little calories and carbs. I counted 110 calories per serving and sweetened with stevia instead of sugar. It’s also made without any dairy, artificial colors, and flavors.

In terms of nutritional value, this product is considered to be a complete protein with it’s 15 different amino acids. A great non-GMO, gluten-free product that tastes good with low calories.

There can be a misconception with how much product you get and how big the container is. It is a large container for how much powder you get, but I believe that the reason is because the powder sets when you start transport. This will compact the powder and make it seem like there is much less powder. As long as you use the measuring scoop that comes with the tub, you should be fine.

Some might feel that the stevia taste is just too sweet. It does inhibit a little of a stevia aftertaste, but that can be fixed by adding this powder to a shake. Personally, I felt that taste was great and I felt that the stevia aftertaste wasn’t an issue at all. I did, however, mix my powder into a shake so YMMV.

Feature Table

    • 26 servings per container
    • 20 grams of complete protein from a multisource plant-based blend
    • 2 services of veggies Vega’s signature greens blend: kale, spinach, broccoli and alfalfa
    • Only 110 calories, no added sugar
    • Non-GMO; vegan, gluten-free and made without dairy, soy and artificial colors, flavors or sweeteners

Taste, Mixing & Consistency

When looking at the taste, mixing & consistency, the biggest thing that I noticed is the stevia aftertaste. I mentioned before that I personally did not feel it was that bad, but other people that have reported to me about this product have complained that it’s too sweet. Again, YMMV so take with it what you will. One thing I do agree with though, is the fact that it doesn’t taste too good when you just mix it with water. I never really saw that as an issue because I always mix my powders into a fruit shake or a green shake because I hate the taste of any protein with just water. This might be the route that you might want to take if you dislike the taste of mixing it with just water.

In terms of mixing, although it does have a thicker consistency, I found that adding around 50% extra water than recommended works better for me. By adding the extra water, it gives the protein more room to allow the consistency to thin out. This techniques makes mixing easier for me.

Nutrient Profile

For a protein that gets all of it’s nutrients from plants, Vega Protein & Greens packs a punch when it comes to how much protein you are getting. First, it has 120 calories per serving which is perfect if you’re looking to lose weight. 1g fat per service, 6g carbs per serving, and a whopping 20g of complete protein from a multi-source plant-based blend. It is a complete protein with 15 different amino acids. A nutrient dense product that is non-GMO, vegan, free of dairy, gluten-free, soy-free, free of artificial flavors, colors and sweeteners.

The real value from this product is the low calorie and nutrient dense protein powder that is made from a plant-based blend. This product is perfect for people that are living a vegan lifestyle, or even for people that are trying to lose weight. The only thing that may sway me from buying this product is the higher price point that it has. But let’s face it, if you’re living a vegan lifestyle, you’re probably already spending quite a bit extra on special niche items. A couple of extra bucks on a good vegan protein shouldn’t be a big deal.

Things to Consider

Vega Protein & Greens is a little bit more expensive than other vegan protein powders, but it’s low in fillers. It has 2 servings of greens based on alfalfa, spinach, broccoli, and kale. Even with this blend, it doesn’t taste bad at all. Vega protein is also a great substitute for fruit in your smoothies if you like to blend your protein powder like I do. I did mention earlier that if you don’t like mixing it with water, you can mix the powder into your favorite yogurt, which will completely change the experience. Seriously, try it, it’s that good.

Positive Customer Reviews

One customer expressed that getting the proper amount of protein for your goals can be difficult, especially if you have trouble ingesting protein. A simple fix that will help you with the taste and the digestion is to just add it to your favorite yogurt. Any odd taste or graininess disappears and it actually tastes quite pleasant.

He also mentioned that the Vega Protein & Greens doesn’t have an offensive smell, but the look of it can turn some people off. It does inhibit a light greenish tint, but mixed with chilled water in a shaker, the taste is palatable.

Negative Customer Reviews

One customer expressed that the stevia inside of the product makes it way too sweet. Personally, I did not have a problem with this as most of the time, I put my protein inside a shake. I hate the chalky taste of protein and try to avoid it as much as possible. My usual route is to put it into a peanut butter, banana, and milk smoothie since the peanut butter hides the protein taste really well.

However, I would use this powder if I was drinking it straight up. The taste, when mixed with water, is overwhelming with stevia. I mean, if you’re into that sort of thing, that’s fine, but personally, unless I mixed this with something, it’s not something that I would drink.

Overall Recommendation

Personally, I would not use this product because I am not vegan and find more value in higher protein by weight. But if you live the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle, this product is great! Some people do feel that the taste of stevia might be overbearing, but mixing it into your favorite yogurt or shake may be the solution to the taste issue.
