Top 10 Best Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Flavors

Top 10 Best Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey Flavors

Optimum Nutrition’s Gold Standard Whey Protein Powder is among the most popular brands of whey powder on the market for a reason. Professional athletes, bodybuilders, and fitness aficionados return to it again and again because it meets the three conditions of an excellent whey powder: high concentration of high quality protein per serving, reasonable price point, and great drinkability. As a loyal Gold Standard customer myself, I cannot emphasize the importance of the last point enough – how gratifying it is to have a protein powder that not only mixes extraordinarily easily and evenly, but makes my daily protein shake a cheerfully anticipated thing of pleasure. I’ve tried nearly all of them, and have listed my ten favorite below. As you can see, I’m more of a chocolate than vanilla enthusiast, which is probably why the chocolate flavors have ousted the vanilla for the top places (although a surprise flavor grabs first prize). Keep in mind that taste is highly variable from one person to the next – and that while Gold Standard stands out as a consistently delicious brand, it might be advisable to try smaller sizes until you find your favorite flavors.

10: Vanilla Ice Cream

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, Vanilla Ice Cream, 5 Pound
  • Gold Standard 100% Whey delivers 24g of whey protein per serving
  • Whey protein shake consumed before or after exercise helps kick start muscle recovery for men and women
  • Gold Standard 100% whey protein powder has 5.5 grams of naturally occurring BCAA’s and 4 grams of naturally occurring glutamine
  • Over 20 delicious flavors to choose from
  • Comes in multiple sizes, choose from 1, 2, 5, or 10 lbs

In 10th place is Vanilla Ice Cream. On its own it’s a serviceable if somewhat bland flavor, but mix it into a shake – cinnamon vanilla oatmeal anyone? – and it adds a creamy, warm hint of vanilla that enhances the original flavor of your drink. It’s inadvisable to mix with just water, however – some fluke of its flavor chemistry makes it downright undrinkable. It’s much better added to some milk, or even, in a pinch, to your home-made protein bars, cookies, or other baked goods for some extra protein goodness. Remember, drinks aren’t the only way to consume your daily shot of protein – get creative! Overall, it’s good to have this versatile flavor in your rotation if you enjoy a hint of vanilla in your other concoctions.

9: Cake Batter

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, Cake Batter, 5 Pound
  • Gold Standard 100% Whey delivers 24g of whey protein per serving
  • Whey protein shake consumed before or after exercise helps kick start muscle recovery for men and women
  • Gold Standard 100% whey protein powder has 5.5 grams of naturally occurring BCAA’s and 4 grams of naturally occurring glutamine
  • Over 20 delicious flavors to choose from
  • Comes in multiple sizes, choose from 1, 2, 5, or 10 lbs

Cake Batter actually tastes quite similar to Vanilla Ice Cream, with an unobtrusive, not-too-sweet, mildly cake-like flavor. Like Vanilla Ice Cream, it’s wonderful mixed with some milk or in a shake that admits a vanilla component. It’s also far more tolerable with just water, although still not the best.

8: Cookies & Cream

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, Cookies and Cream, 5 Pound
  • Gold Standard 100% Whey delivers 24g of whey protein per serving
  • Whey protein shake consumed before or after exercise helps kick start muscle recovery for men and women

  • Over 20 delicious flavors to choose from
  • Comes in multiple sizes, choose from 1, 2, 5, or 10 lbs

Cookies and Cream has been a been a hallmark flavor in the protein world for as long as I can remember, and the Gold Standard version is a consistent member of my rotation. Simply put, it’s great for those who love cookies and cream! Like the first two flavors, it has a warm, smooth vanilla taste but it also has cookie chunks mixed in – a pro or a con depending on your preference. I personally love the hints of chocolate that I get in my shake, and think it’s fantastic for pancakes and waffles. However, for those of you who don’t like chunks, this can be an annoyance since they won’t dissolve smoothly unless mixed in a blender.

7: Coffee

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, White Chocolate, 5 Pound

I love coffee, and if you do too you will love this flavor. It tastes just like coffee ice cream or a Starbucks Frappuccino. It’s not too sweet and not too bitter – just right. A delightful drink on its own or with chocolate, vanilla, banana, oatmeal – hell anything that goes with coffee. A single serving also contains 40mg of caffeine, so for those of you who like a kick in the morning, this protein choice kills two birds with one stone. Pro tip – add a little creamer to it for that coffee house taste.

6: White Chocolate

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, White Chocolate, 5 Pound

Of the 27 flavors offered by Gold Standard, this one grabs my heart at 6th place. It’s tastes just like white chocolate and is extremely diverse, great in water, milk, or blended with any number of fruits, veggies, and flavor syrups. It’s rather sweet, though, so be careful about proportions if you don’t like overly sweet things. On the other hand, it’s great as a dessert shake.

5: Rocky Road

Sale
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, Rocky Road, 5 Pound
  • Gold Standard 100% Whey delivers 24g of whey protein per serving
  • Whey protein shake consumed before or after exercise helps kick start muscle recovery for men and women
  • Gold Standard 100% whey protein powder has 5.5 grams of naturally occurring BCAA’s and 4 grams of naturally occurring glutamine
  • Over 20 delicious flavors to choose from
  • Comes in multiple sizes, choose from 1, 2, 5, or 10 lbs

Entering chocolate country, Rocky Road clocks in as one of my top five choices. Warm, comforting marshmallow mingles with rich, mellow chocolate for a truly decadent flavor that will make you forget you’re even drinking a protein supplement. It’s sweet but not too sweet, great with water, even better in milk, and amazing in a shake. Be sure to try this out if you haven’t already! You might never feel the need to order another flavor.

4: Double Rich Chocolate

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, Double Rich Chocolate, 5 Pound

As its name suggests, Double Rich Chocolate is beautifully rich and chocolate-y. It’s absolutely sinful in milk – in fact I’ve caught myself mistakenly referring to it as a milkshake, it’s that good – and mixes wonderfully with a whole gamut of fruits, grains, and vegetables. Despite its full chocolate flavor it’s actually only semi-sweet. Personally, I can’t drink something too sweet in the morning, so it’s perfect for my breakfast. It’s also great for those who like to modulate sweetness level, since you can easily add a sweetener like honey or Stevia.

3: Extreme Milk Chocolate

Sale
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, Extreme Milk Chocolate, 5 Pound

Slightly sweeter than Double Rich Chocolate, Extreme Chocolate Milk is one of the most popular flavors from Gold Standard. To my mind it tastes like those steaming rich mugfuls of Nesquik that my mom would give me after a day of playing in the snow. Like Double Rich Chocolate, this is the kind of chocolate flavor that blends beautifully with just about anything imaginable, and is even great with just water. It also makes for a delicious chocolate ice for those midnight cravings – just mix it thick with water (or with some cream if you’re cheating), and freeze!

2: Mocha Cappuccino

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, Mocha Cappuccino, 5 Pound

Mocha Cappuccino isn’t one of the most widely known flavors from Gold Standard, and in fact I wouldn’t have tried it out if it weren’t recommended to me by a friend. But I am sure glad that he did! Maybe it’s the combination of my two loves, but with its sophisticated, subtle balance of coffee and chocolate this flavor is just one I can’t get enough of. It’s also not too sweet, tastes wonderful with some milk, and complements well in a shake. If you’re on the fence about this flavor, make sure to check it out: you won’t regret it.

1: Delicious Strawberry

Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey Protein Powder, Delicious Strawberry, 5 Pound

  • Over 20 delicious flavors to choose from
  • Comes in multiple sizes, choose from 1, 2, 5, or 10 lbs

Imagine a strawberry creme cocktail made fresh for you at an outdoor cafe; imagine how welcoming, light, and delicious it is, how perfectly it starts your day. Now imagine a protein powder that delivers this experience. Optimum Nutrition Delicious Strawberry is, bar none, the most delicious protein powder that I have ever tried in my life. It’s sweet and fresh in just water, and in a shake, complements rather than overwhelms with a light cream finish. It has no artificial aftertaste, no chalky bite. It tastes like a lovely strawberry ice cream. Simply put, I will never stop buying this flavor.

Mixing the Protein Power With Water

A little quick tip if you mix water into your protein powder, make sure you add a little bit of water before you add the protein. This will make it much easier to mix and will reduce the chances of you getting big clumps of unmixed protein powder.

My Favorite High Calorie & High Protein Shake Recipe

For a high calorie & high protein shake, all you need are the following ingredients:

  • Your Favorite Optimum Nutrition Protein Powder
  • 1 Medium Sized Banana
  • A Big Scoop of Peanut Butter
  • Whole Milk
  • Your Favorite Blender

Directions:

  • Step 1: Peel banana and add to blender
  • Step 2: Add 2 scoops of your favorite Optimum Nutrition Flavor
  • Step 3: Add 1 big scoop of peanut butter
  • Step 4: Add 2 cups (or more if you’re looking for more calories) of whole milk
  • Step 5: (OPTIONAL) Add ice
  • Step 6: Blend it all together until smooth

This protein shake will have roughly 800 calories with roughly 70g of protein. A great protein shake when you’re bulking or a meal replacement.

  1. Hi you mentioned mixing with a shake and then mixing the strawberry with a mix. Can you point me to some good shake recipes and maybe elaborate more on the strawberry mix? That’s the one I was looking at since I’m not really a vanilla/chocolate person unless there is more in it. May have to try the White Chocolate though.

    1. Hey Mark,

Thanks for the comment! Depends what you’re looking to do. Are you looking to bulk? Are you looking to cut? Are you using the protein for just everyday nutritional purposes?

If you’re looking to bulk, I would suggest a banana, peanut butter, protein, and whole milk shake. I put 1 medium sized banana, I grab a spoon and scoop out a good portion of peanut butter (and then feed the left overs on the spoon to my dogs), add 2 scoops of protein and top it off with some whole milk. I believe it’s around 700-1000 calories with around 50-60g of protein. Perfect if you’re looking to add more calories and hit your protein intake for the day.

If you’re looking to cut, normally, I would just keep it out of a shake and add just water to the powder since 1 scoop is around 200 calories. Adding anything extra will just add unnecessary calories. The strawberry protein really isn’t bad at all. It’s actually the best tasting (in my opinion) out of all of the Optimum Nutrition flavors. If you really don’t like the taste, then add in some frozen strawberries and mangos with water. That’ll help with the taste but will add some calories and sugar to your shake.

If you’re looking just for nutritional purposes, then add some kale, a little bit of ginger, some raw steel oats, a banana and an apple with 1 scoop of protein. This will give you some anti-inflammatory from the ginger, fiber from the kale and apple, carbs from the oats, banana, and apple, and protein from the protein mix.
