Imperial Barber Classic Pomade Review

Imperial Barber Classic Pomade Review

Imperial Barber Classic Pomade is a pomade made by barbers for the people that are serious about looking the best they can possibly be. These barbers that created this pomade know exactly what they’re doing, and it shows. Not only did they create this great pomade, they are also owners of the prestigious “Razorbacks Barbershop” in Long Beach, CA, which is my main and #1 barbershop. Just a little tip, if you do ever get the privilege to get a cut from Razorbacks, make sure you ask for Joel. Amazing barber with tremendous skills.

But really, the reason why you’re here is not to talk about Barbershops… it’s to find out how good the Imperial Pomade is! So here is my review on the Imperial Barber Classic Pomade made by the owners of Razorbacks Barbershop.

This product is designed very well. The container features a white color with a contrasting black top finish that presents a good looking container.

The first thing that I noticed when I opened the container is the smell. Has a slight watermelon/jolly rancher smell that is a little sharper. I can see how some people may not like the smell, but I personally think it smells great!

When it comes to the pomade itself, it’s transparent and clear.

Like most pomades, you should be applying the product when your hair is either damp or a little wet. The same is true for the Imperial Barber Classic Pomade. One thing to note, however, is that in order for this product to work well, your hair does have to be pretty wet. Just grab a dollop, or a quarter size worth of pomade, mix it into your hands with a circular motion, and apply it to your hair while damp. After all of this, just let it dry.

When dry, this product leaves your hair a little crunchy, but stays strong. It also has little shine that won’t leave your friends blind when the sun reflects off of your hair.

This product is water-soluble as well, which means that it won’t be as greasy as petroleum-based pomades.

Long Lasting Hold

A characteristic that I find very valuable in pomades is how many times do I have to apply this product? If I have to do multiple applications in a day, I will generally stay away from that pomade. Imperial Barber Classic Pomade is one that I do NOT have to apply more than once. There is, however, a lag in the beginning since you have to apply the pomade when your hair is slightly wet, and then you have to wait for the hair to dry, which can take an upwards of an hour depending on how long your hair is. But once the product dries and the pomade is settled in, it will stay in your hair and hold true until the time comes when you want to wash it out.

Also, let’s say you want to “re-activate” your hair because you’ve been having fun and it became a little unkept. All you have to do is add a little water, comb through, and you’ll be able to achieve the same result. This will not only save you some of the product, but also some of your money as well since you’re restyling with your previous application. This brings up the value of the product tremendously.

How Strong is the Hold

This pomade is advertised as featuring a medium strength hold, but I found it to be more of a medium-strong hold. Not as strong as Layrite or Suavecito, it does have a hold that will keep your hair styled all day.

One thing that you should keep in mind though, is that once it has dried, it does have some gel-like characteristics. Kind of like how gel dries a little crunchy, Imperial Barber Classic Pomades does inhibit similar traits. Despite this flaw, the product still does hold really well.

Even with its good medium/high strength hold, the product is really easy to wash out. Because it’s water-soluble, all you need to do is put your hair through some water and the pomade should wash right out. If you really want to make sure everything is out, just go ahead and add some shampoo and conditioner and your hair should be 100% free from all of the pomade, make your hair feel clean and non greasy afterwards.

Types of Hair That This Product is Good For

This product is especially good for thick hair, which seems to hold the pomade really well. It needs to have some kind of volume in order for the product to stay together and hold all day. Because of this, Asian hair seems to be ideal for this kind of product as Asian hair is generally more think with fine strands.

Pros & Cons

This is my section for pros & cons for this pomade. Read on to see what I think!

  • Washes out easy
  • Good medium hold if you’re looking for that
  • Will hold your hair all day
  • Works well in conjunction of hair spray
  • You can “re-activate” by adding a little bit of water instead of washing out and redoing the whole process again.
  • Pretty good price point in terms of price per ounce
  • Scent does not last (this can be good or bad depending on preference)
  • Smells good
  • Not greasy
  • Not too shiny
  • Does not get affected in the rain or snow

  • Decent for wavy or curly hair. Although it provides good hold and volume, not strong enough to withstand mildly wavy hair without using a lot
  • Dries like hairspray or gel (crusty)
  • Not as strong, but that’s pretty normal for a classic hold pomade
  • Scent does not last (this can be good or bad depending on preference)

Yes. A thousand times yes. I firmly believe this is one of the best pomades that I have ever used. Factor into the fact that I also get my cut at the establishment that the creators own, I have walked out many times when they have styled my hair with Imperial VERY satisfied. Love the smell, love the hold, and love the fact that I only have to apply it once for the whole day.

Some closing thoughts that I have about this product: Good design on the product with a dry finish, leaves your hair a little crispy but keeps it intact, will keep its hold through the rain and snow, does not need multiple applications, can “re-activate” by adding a little bit of water and combing through, apply to damp/semi-wet hair, style and let it dry afterwards, and lastly, don’t apply to dry hair.

Rated 4/5. It lost 1 rating because I personally didn’t care for the dry, crispy-like, finish. However, every single other aspect of this pomade is great. A good price to quantity ratio with good hold make this pomade a very valuable product.
